F*ck Off Addison Lee

I don’t really use cabs in London unless all other transport can’t get me home either because of the lack of public transport due to the time in the morning or inebriation. I do however cycle most places unless it is horrifically bad weather or again, inebriation. I was having a chat with a workmate the other day about who are the worst users of the road when you are out on a bike, with my opinion black cabs and his Addison Lee taxis. Turns out he was right and further more THEY HAVE BEEN INSTRUCTED TO BE SH!T TO CYCLIST. I posted a while back about Cities Fit For Cycling by The Times and yet again they have hit the nail on the head with this article. In no way am I saying you should go kick the doors in of the next Addi Lee cab you see, but I hope that any of you reading this will not take another Addison Lee taxi and spread your utter disgust towards the company and anyone who ignores this and carries on using them. Hopefully it will mean less of the ghost bikes (shown above) popping up around London.

Chip Shop Awards

I had no idea that this existed but apparently The Chip Shop Awards have been going since 2002. Basically they are histerical, and apparently our own JoWo had something to do with this one! One of my favourites is above but click here to check out a load more of this year’s entries.

Cities Fit For Cycling

You may or may not know that over the last couple of years I have turned into a bit of a cycle nut. In fact so much so I now own two bikes and probably another half in random parts that the girlfriend get increasingly annoyed at being left around the flat. The specific part that I have really fallen in love with though is riding the streets on my fixed wheel but according to stats this is now more dangerous than war with more deaths from riding the streets of Britain than killed in Afghanistan and Iraq.

The Times have started a campaign with an eight point manifesto –

  • Trucks entering a city centre should be required by law to fit sensors, audible truck-turning alarms, extra mirrors and safety bars to stop cyclists being thrown under the wheels.
  • The 500 most dangerous road junctions must be identified, redesigned or fitted with priority traffic lights for cyclists and Trixi mirrors that allow lorry drivers to see cyclists on their near-side.
  • A national audit of cycling to find out how many people cycle in Britain and how cyclists are killed or injured should be held to underpin effective cycle safety.
  • Two per cent of the Highways Agency budget should be earmarked for next generation cycle routes, providing £100 million a year towards world-class cycling infrastructure. Each year cities should be graded on the quality of cycling provision.
  • The training of cyclists and drivers must improve and cycle safety should become a core part of the driving test.
  • 20mph should become the default speed limit in residential areas where there are no cycle lanes.
  • Businesses should be invited to sponsor cycleways and cycling super-highways, mirroring the Barclays-backed bicycle hire scheme in London.
  • Every city, even those without an elected mayor, should appoint a cycling commissioner to push home reforms.
